Home Improvement: To Add On or Start From Scratch

If you’re looking to do a home improvement project, one of the first questions you may want to ask is if you’re going to add on to an existing structure or do you want to start from scratch. There are pros and cons to each approach, but the more you think about things ahead of time, the more likely you are to be happy with the result after you’ve made a decision.

If you’re planning on building a new home entirely, consider home and land packages. If you’re looking to do more reasonable projects, think about taking on a small DIY. Larger visions may require professional renovations. And no matter what, you should think about home improvement in terms of long-term investment.

Home and Land Packages

For an entirely new vision, consider buying a home and land package. Companies can either find the perfect parcel of land for you or show you the perfect house that will fit on an existing piece of property. This is home improvement at its ultimate raw state. You get to start from nothing and build exactly what you can envision as your perfect residence.

Small DIY Projects

For small home improvement projects, taking on something like a kitchen DIY or a bedroom repainting project may be a good place to start. Find some activity that you can do without purchasing a lot of specialized tools, and then spend your time, money, and energy learning a new skill at the same time that you’re customizing the home that you live in currently. Small DIY projects can even turn into family bonding events, so that is a positive for the entire family structure.

Professional Renovations

Somewhere between the ideas of adding on or starting from scratch, you’ll find that professional renovations are just the ticket. For example, you may want to add a hot tub onto your deck. Alternatively, maybe you want to add a new, fancy bathroom onto your master bedroom suite. These are jobs that will be tough to handle on your own, but a professional construction company can command and work precisely to your specifications so that you get what you want in the end.

Think About Long-Term Investments

It’s always important to keep costs in mind. If you’re spending $5000 on a home improvement project, does it increase the value of your home by that same $5000? As long as you’re not losing money on home improvement projects, you don’t have to worry too much about it. But if you’re going to spend a lot of money on a project that doesn’t increase the value of your home and doesn’t improve your standard of living by that much, it might be time to rethink that style of improvement.
