What are the Different Types of Silicone Gaskets


Practically all manufacturing companies have applications for silicone gaskets due to silicone’s versatility. Silicone and silicone-based gaskets commonly have many positive qualities, including splendid resiliency and heat resistance. They come available as moulded gaskets, foam, or sponge gaskets, and shapes which are cut from solid silicone material. Some producers make distinctive gaskets from various materials, such as gel-based silicone or silicone moulded with metal, for specialised industrial applications.

Some of the distinctive companies that use gaskets manufactured from silicone include food and medical institutions, aviation and vehicle-based industries, plus electronic manufacturers. Gasket manufacturers usually make silicone gaskets with one of four different ways. They are die-cut or water jet equipment to cut solid gasket material used to create solid gaskets. Sponge and foam gaskets are somewhat similar, but the material utilised is marginally different. The fourth process applies a mould injection technique.

Businesses order the type of gasket that best matches their requirements, such as the using of foam gaskets for vibration-reducing seals or smart gaskets. Solid silicone gaskets are the firmest type of gasket and although many gasket manufacturers cut solid gaskets from sheets of solid silicone, some will use the injection or compression moulding technique. Silicone gasket sheeting is available for anyone who wishes to custom cut their own gaskets.

Sponge gaskets can vary from soft to firm. The firm grade of sponge gasket material is similar to the soft grade of solid gasket material, whereas sponge silicone gasket material is of a closed cell type, called expanded silicone rubber. Makers offer foam gasket material as either closed or open cell. (The open cell type gaskets are known to be effective as dust-resistant seals).

Put to an Amazing Array of Uses

Quite often businesses use injection-moulded silicone gaskets in a situation where the gasket has to be submerged in a liquid, such as water. Usually, manufacturers utilise food-grade, injection-moulded gaskets to seal tanks, such as for milk, molasses, or syrup vehicle. Gaskets made from silicone material are generally stable at extreme temperatures, such as -73°C to 260°C, which makes them superior choices for shipping containers and food processing.

Some applications happen to need special silicone gaskets, such as ones that contain metal, which is often used to create electrical conductivity. Whilst on the other hand, silicone blended with materials, such as ceramic powders, can be used to reduce heat in electronic devices without creating any electrical conductivity. Fluor silicone is chemical, oil, and gas resistant and all of these are prime examples of the versatility of silicone.

And Not Forgetting Food Grade

Businesses will naturally use food-grade silicone gaskets in things such as water purification and filtration seals, oven and refrigeration seals, and food-manufacturing operations, such as ice cream making devices, cheese-making equipment, and beverage vats.

The humble gasket! So many helpful uses and yet not really something that is well known for the job it does to the public in general.
